Let's take a closer look at the lifters. If you've done all you can to quiet them, then it might be time to replace them. Once the cams are out, you can pull them easily with a magnet. You can sometimes pinpoint one or two, or you can swap all 16. Use a little assembly lube on the new ones, let them rest in place for an hour or so, and turn the engine by hand a couple times before starting it. Looking at a timing belt on a stock Miata is hard because of the one piece valve/cam cover. But even if you can look at it, it's hard to determine the condition. So many of the components in your Miata depend on bearings to operate. Make sure you listen for noises (even small ones) and check components that could cause serious damage. A bad fan bearing, water pump or alternator bearing, can take out an engine. A bad wheel bearing can be the cause of a crash. So if in doubt, check it out! Something simple, but can cause headaches is unevenly worn pads. Make sure you check outside and inside pads.
